The following projects are currently in progress (or recently completed) with stakeholder engagement and national/international World Heritage expert engagement underway to support the vision to bring opportunities for every person and community across the region from a World Heritage listed region.

Protected heritage site identification

Supported by the City of Ballarat on behalf of the local government partnership. This project identifies, investigates and maps the major clusters of already protected goldrush era heritage sites (c1850-1900) from the thousands that exist across the Central Victorian Goldfields region. This information will be used to inform the shortlisting of sites for World Heritage and for creating cross-regional ‘World Heritage Journeys’. These journeys will take visitors to the region’s many significant goldrush places and tourism experiences, including and beyond the World Heritage listing. The project includes stakeholder and community engagement, including seeking public input via ‘Share Your Story‘.

Economic benefits assessment

Co-funded by the City of Ballarat, City of Greater Bendigo and the Victorian Goldfields Tourism Executive on behalf of the local government partnership, this project has delivered detailed projections required as part of a World Heritage nomination relating to the ‘projected levels of tourism’ and ‘visitor facilities and infrastructure … to meet the needs of visitors’ (UNESCO). Further, the report details the economic, social and cultural benefits to be derived from a World Heritage listing in the Central Victorian Goldfields – information that is required to help secure investment to deliver both the bid and the infrastructure needed to support a World Heritage listing over the long-term. Importantly, the report highlights the capacity of World Heritage listing + targeted infrastructure investment to disperse tourism benefits more evenly across the region, not just in the major tourist areas of Ballarat and Bendigo, which would otherwise not be the case.

The report was launched by The Hon John Brumby AO, The Hon Dr. Denis Napthine AO, Mayor Cr Daniel Moloney (City of Ballarat), Mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf (City of Greater Bendigo) and Mayor Cr Tim Drylie (Hepburn Shire Council), along with partner Councils and the Victorian Goldfields Tourism Executive on 6 October 2022.
