Wahalla_Baw Baw Shire

Baw Baw Shire and Indigo Shire have joined the 13 Central Victorian Goldfields local governments to pursue World Heritage listing for the Victorian Goldfields – and we’re excited to have these two eastern Victorian Councils on board!

The two shires were identified as needing further investigation by World Heritage experts following an extensive global, national and local comparative analysis.

Expected to take five years or more to identify the final list of sites, undertake extensive community engagement and gain government approvals, if successful the bid would enshrine Victoria’s goldfields alongside the Sydney Opera House, Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens, Australian Convict Sites and the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape as Australian sites of world historical and cultural significance.
